She had been such a young child when she asked her mother where do people go when they die.  The answer, when her mother had thought of one appropriate for somebody of her young age, was an answer tailored for a child.  They go live on the moon, her mother had told her. The answer had stuck with her for all of these years, especially since that horrible day when her mother left their home and went to live on the moon herself.

She believed everything her mother had told her when she was a child because, no matter how hard she tried, she had found no evidence to contradict what her mother had told her. She also believed that her mother had been correct when she told her that she was concerned about Luna being so ‘different’ from all of the other children, and that she worried that Luna would always be alone. Luna was sixteen now and still believed what her mother had told her.  After all, she had found no evidence to contradict her.

Her boots knew the path around the Black Lake well enough by this time.  She walked along in the darkness to her favorite spot where she would watch the moon rise over the lake and Luna would lay on the soft yielding moss and talk to her mother on the moon.  She had walked this path many times during the last few years, and always she walked alone.  By now, she was used to the feeling.

Her place by the lake was no different than many others just like it scattered around the shoreline.  It stood encircled by a stand of thick tall trees that hid it from the casual observer.  Occasionally, she would find evidence that other students knew about her spot, an overlooked cigarette butt or a small scrap of wrapper from a sweet, but to her it was hers, and it was special.  The small moss floored clearing within the ring of trees reminded her of the so-called fairy rings she had visited with her father years ago. She liked to think that maybe it was a magical place and that someday the fairies would come and visit her there.  Perhaps they could become the friends she craved so badly.

She changed her mind about the fairies though when she considered the thought further. Watching the moonrise and talking to her mother were not the only activities that she pursued within this special place.  Some nights, she would lay naked on the soft moss, under the star filled sky, and explore her changing body. She had experienced her first orgasm there a few months ago and was amazed by the new and powerful feelings.  She felt no shame about it, for her mother had once told her that masturbation was not an evil thing and was a completely normal activity.  She had tried it within the curtained confines of her bed in the Ravenclaw dormitory, but she preferred to do it out here in the night, under the stars.  It made her special place even more hers and the feeling made her smile as she walked along.  She just wondered how it would feel to not be alone when she did it, and how it would feel to have a warm body next to her that actually cared for her.

She turned at the little path that led down to her spot on the shore but a small sound made her stop in her tracks.  Never had she come to this place and found anybody else there, but tonight the sounds coming up from the shore told her that she was not the first here tonight.  She felt that she should leave, but the quiet sounds of little cries and soft whimpers coming from the spot were definitely feminine and somehow seemed vaguely familiar.  Without really knowing why, she pulled her long black cloak tighter about her and pulled the full hood lower down over her pale face.  She crept forward slowly until she could see clearly what was making the soft noises.

At times she felt sorry for Harry having to use an Invisibility Cloak when he wanted not to be seen.  Luna had her own cloak of invisibility with her at all times. It was called her skin.  She knew how to withdraw into herself and not attract attention form some of the other students, who liked to torment her and call her names. She had perfected the art of sitting in plain sight and not being noticed when she didn’t wish to be.  She was wearing it now as she gazed at the scene unfolding in the clearing.

The moon was not yet full but there was enough light for her to see the two girls lying on the mossy bed.  It took her but a moment to recognize Hermione and Ginny as they danced a lovers dance unfamiliar to her.  Luna knew them both of course, after all they were all in Dumbledore’s Army together, but she had never seen them naked before as they were now.  Luna had suspected that these two of her small number of acquaintances were involved with each other.  The signs were there if you looked for them, and Luna was always looking.  She had seen their little touches when they thought nobody was watching and once she had even seen them exchange a quick kiss in the darkened hallway outside of the Room of Requirements after a meeting.  Luna liked them both and often wished that their casual friendship could become something more, something that meant she wouldn’t have to feel so alone anymore.

She stood there in the shadows of the great trees and a part of her wanted to run away, but another part of her yearned to watch.  She stood as motionless as a statue in the moonlight as she gazed hungrily at the sight unfolding before her.  The dancers shifted position yet again as Ginny lay on her back and Hermione straddled her. She watched as Ginny’s face buried itself between Hermione’s widely parted thighs and she saw her pulling Ginny’s mouth into her with her head thrown back facing the rising moon. Luna couldn’t tear her eyes away from Hermione.

The rising moon shone through Hermione’s wild bushy brown hair giving her a golden halo of ethereal golden light.  Hermione, who was always so proper, was now writhing over Ginny in the moonlight, her hips thrusting faster and faster as she neared the end of her dance.  Luna found herself licking her dry lips as she watched Hermione’s firm breasts with their taught dark nipples bouncing in the dim light as Ginny forced her mouth ever tighter to her. She was aware of the building heat between her own thighs and could feel the moisture start to flow as she watched from the shadows.  She desperately wanted to slip her hand into her robes and give herself relief but she dared not move lest she be discovered.

The light breeze brought the sweet scents of the girls’ arousal to her, and she inhaled them deeply, savoring them like a sip of heady wine.  She watched as Hermione’s dance came to its inevitable end, her face contorted as if she were in agony, her head thrown back with abandon and her eyes tightly shut, and saw rather than heard the cry that escaped her lips. She watched as they collapsed one upon the other, their bodies becoming a tangle of arms and legs and their mouths covering each other with tender kisses.  She felt her own knees begin to tremble but she didn’t know if it was caused by what watching the lovers dance playing out before her, or from the effort of standing so long without moving.

From the shadow of her tree she saw the girls dress and prepare to leave, but not before exchanging lingering, loving kisses in the moonlight.  As they walked past her deeply shadowed hiding place only a few feet separated them all and she heard them arrange for another meeting tomorrow night at this same spot.  When they walked past, she saw Ginny pause and seemingly sniff the night air.  She said something to Hermione but Luna couldn’t quite make out the words.  Hermione just grinned and said, “Soon,” and then they were gone into the darkness.

Luna continued to stand in the shadows for quite a while after they left, not because she was afraid she would be seen, but because she found that her legs were so tight that she couldn’t move.  In time, her legs relaxed and carried her to the mossy circle where she collapsed, exhausted and spent, bathed in the light of the moon and the twinkling stars.  She gave herself the release she had wanted so badly and then lay there thinking about what she had seen.

She found that she was conflicted to a degree.  She was happy for Hermione and Ginny, happy that they had found each other and seemed to be so much in love. She also felt a tinge of mild envy in that she was the one who wanted someone so badly, but was only allowed to be a spectator.  She talked to her mother for a long time that night and finally resigned herself to the fact that her mother had been right. It must be her fate to wander through life only as a spectator and never participate fully in the great dance of life.

Without knowing how she got there or why, she found herself standing in the shadows the following night and watching her friends make love. The moon was little brighter tonight and she marveled at how the light made Ginny’s pale skin glow and her red hair so alive.  She found that she loved to watch the play of Ginny’s hard muscles move so smoothly under her skin as she and her lover explored new and ever evolving steps to their dance of love.  It was a sight that, seemingly, she could not get enough of.

She returned the next night and the next and on the fifth night the moon was at it’s brightest, flooding the circle with an almost daylight intensity. Luna was having trouble finding enough deep shadow to hide in, but finally managed to slip between two of the tall graceful trees and felt that she would be safe there.  She had only watched for a few minutes before she felt the now familiar warmth building between her rapidly dampening thighs. She stood there transfixed by the sight of Hermione’s glistening fingers rapidly moving in and out of Ginny.  She could hear the soft wet sound that they made as they were plunged inward and slowly withdrawn.  Her pale eyes watched Ginny buck and heave on the ground as her body went from taut and rigid to completely relaxed in the span of but a few short moments. Luna found her own breathing was in time with Ginny’s and could almost feel Ginny’s release as her own.  She closed her eyes for a second as she replayed Ginny’s orgasm over in her mind, but when she opened them again the girls had both moved. Now they were standing right in front of her with their arms extended towards her, both with laughing eyes and quiet smiles.

“Come dance with us,” said Hermione, beckoning.

“We’ve waited for you to join us for far too long,” said Ginny stepping towards her.

Luna found herself being led into the circle by her two friends and she found that the thought of not joining them was something she didn’t even want to think about.

“How did you know I was here?” she asked timidly.

“We’ve known since the first night,” laughed Ginny. “I could smell your perfume on the air.”

“But, I wasn’t wearing any,” said Luna looking a little perplexed.

“Not that kind,” laughed Hermione, “your perfume, this one, here.” Luna felt a fingertip brush lightly against her sex and her knees almost buckled from the feeling of wanting.

She saw Hermione swish her wand and she found herself as naked in the moonlight as her two friends.  The girls took her by the hands, laid her gently down on the yielding moss and spent the rest of the night teaching her all of the steps she had wanted to know for so long. For somebody such as Luna who had never experienced the feeling of even a simple kiss except from her parents, it was a night of first experiences, as she had never known.

She lay there, her pale skin aglow in the golden moonlight, long after Hermione and Ginny had said goodnight and departed this special place that now belonged to the three of them. In the past, when the shimmering moonlight seemed to make a path across the still waters of the lake, she had wanted to set foot upon it and walk all the way to her mother’s side.  After tonight, she decided that taking that path could wait for a while.

She dressed slowly, deep in thought about all of the things her mother had told her so many years ago, all the things she had believed until this night.  Before she left her sacred spot she turned to face the fullness of the moon and her voice was no longer that of a child asking questions of her mother, it was the voice of a young woman who had finally found a place for herself in this world.

“You may have been right about a lot of things Mum,” she said to the moon in her new voice.  “But...you were wrong about one thing.  They love me you see, as I do the both of them. You don’t have to worry about me being alone any more.”

The End
